Eco-Friendly Summer Habits for Busy Professionals

It’s a little frustrating having to slot back into work and school routines when the sun is shining, it’s hot and outside beckons. However, there’s still plenty of time to enjoy the great outdoors while at the same time embracing eco-friendly habits. With daylight lasting until around 8:30 PM, we have the perfect opportunity to make small yet impactful choices that benefit both the environment and our well-being. Here are some simple ways to stay sustainable during summer evenings while balancing a busy schedule.

1. Be a Greener Commuter

If possible, swap out your car for a more sustainable commuting option. Biking, walking, or even using public transport can reduce your carbon footprint. If you are one of those lucky people who are able to work from home at least some of the time, you will also be cutting back on emissions, compared to driving each day.

2. Dine Sustainably with Seasonal Produce

Take advantage of fresh, locally sourced summer produce to create delicious meals with a lower environmental impact. Visit farmers' markets after work or grow your own herbs and vegetables at home. Cooking outside using a gas or electric barbecue is a great way to keep the kitchen cool and reduce energy use.

3. Opt for Outdoor Fitness

Skip the gym and take your workout outside! Running, cycling, yoga, or even bodyweight exercises in a local park can help you stay active while avoiding the energy consumption of indoor fitness centres. Consider joining an outdoor fitness group to make it a social and sustainable habit.

4. Embrace a Low-Waste Lifestyle

Reduce single-use plastics by bringing a reusable water bottle and coffee cup to work. Pack your meals in reusable containers and say no to plastic cutlery. If you grab a takeaway after work, opt for restaurants that use sustainable packaging.

5. Make the Most of Natural Light

With longer daylight hours, minimise artificial lighting at home. Spend your evenings outside—whether reading in the garden, hosting a picnic, or enjoying a walk at the beach or in the neighbourhood. Using solar-powered garden lights can also brighten your outdoor space sustainably.

6. Volunteer for Local Environmental Initiatives

Use your free evenings to give back to the planet. Many communities organise beach or park clean-ups, tree-planting events, and sustainability workshops. These activities not only contribute to a greener planet but also connect you with like-minded individuals.

7. Conserve Energy at Home

As temperatures remain warm, be mindful of energy consumption. Use fans instead of air conditioning when possible, unplug devices when not in use, and switch to LED bulbs if you haven’t already. It is great to be able to dry clothes outside instead of using a dryer. Apart from saving energy, your clothes will smell deliciously fresh when you bring them back inside.

By integrating these eco-friendly habits into your summer routine, you can continue to make a positive impact on the environment without compromising your daily responsibilities. With a little effort, sustainability can become second nature—even during the busiest of seasons!
