A Winter Bucket List

While our friends and family on the other side of the world are soaking up the sun, it's our turn to revel in the magic of winter. Whether you’re a snow enthusiast or prefer cosying up indoors, the Southern Hemisphere has something special to offer during the colder months. Here’s your ultimate winter bucket list to make the most of the season.

  1. Hit the Slopes
When winter arrives, the mountains beckon! In New Zealand we are very lucky to have world class ski fields in both the North and South Islands for some top-notch skiing and snowboarding. If you’re not into the adrenaline rush, try snowboarding or tobogganing instead. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of gliding down a powdery slope.
  2. Warm Up at a Hot Spring
After a day in the snow, or just for fun on a cold day, there’s no better way to thaw out than soaking in a hot spring. We have many thermal pools around the country, that offer rejuvenating natural warm waters to warm up a cold winter day, and melt away your stress.
  3. Explore a Winter Festival
Matariki is a very special time - celebrating the Maori New Year. This year the Matariki star cluster becomes visible in the night sky at the end of June, and the public holiday falls on Friday 28 June. All around the country, there will be cultural performances, light shows, Māori Art workshops and stargazing events, as most towns and cities will have their own Matariki event.
There are also lots of other winter festivals to explore around the country. See here for some other top spots to visit to enjoy winter festivities.
  4. Indulge in Comfort Food
Winter is the perfect excuse to indulge in hearty, soul-warming food such as rich stews, creamy soups, and hot chocolate. Visit local markets to sample seasonal delights or try your hand at cooking traditional winter dishes. There's something incredibly comforting about a homemade meal enjoyed by the fireplace.
  5. Hold a Mid-Winter Christmas dinner
This can be a really fun activity to do with family and friends. Put together a lovely meal and try making some mulled wine. For those unfamiliar with this delicious tipple, it’s a warm alcoholic beverage made with red wine, brandy, and spices like cinnamon and cloves. On a cold winter’s night, it really hits the spot, and it’s a perfect drink to have as part of your mid-winter celebrations. You might like to have presents and games too, to make it feel more Christmassy. It is certainly a fun activity to liven up a dull, cold winter evening.
  6. Take a Scenic Winter Hike
Just because it’s cold doesn’t mean you have to stay indoors. Winter transforms landscapes into breathtaking scenes, perfect for a scenic hike. It is also very good for your mental health to get outside and enjoy fresh air by walking in the bush or on the beach, brushing away the cobwebs. So dress up warmly, grab a friend and/or the dog and venture outdoors.
  7. Enjoy a Cosy Staycation
Sometimes the best winter activity is staying in. Create the ultimate cozy retreat at home with soft blankets, scented candles, and your favourite books or movies. Make a pot of mulled wine or hot cider, and enjoy the simple pleasures of a quiet winter day.
  8. Try Ice Skating
Ice skating is a quintessential winter activity that’s fun for all ages. Many cities in the set up temporary ice rinks during winter. Glide gracefully (or not so gracefully!) around the rink with friends and family. It’s a great way to embrace the season and get a bit of exercise.
  9. Visit a Winter Wonderland
Some places truly come alive in winter. If there has been some recent snow falls, take the kids (or find some kids to come with you) up the local hills or mountains for a true winter wonderland experience. Build a snowman, have a snowball fight, or simply marvel at the serene beauty of a snow-covered landscape.
  10. Experience a Winter Night Sky
Winter skies are often clearer, making it a fantastic time for stargazing. Head away from city lights to a dark-sky reserve or a rural area, and look up in awe at the Milky Way and constellations and see if you can find Matariki. The crisp winter air adds an extra layer of magic to the stargazing experience.

Even though many of us find this the most challenging time of year, winter can be brimming with opportunities for adventure, relaxation, and everything in between. Whether you’re braving the cold outdoors or staying snug inside, make the most of this season with our ultimate winter bucket list.
